Marriages: Notaries can now officiate them without going to the Civil Registry. As of yesterday, April 30th, Spanish notaries can authorize marriage certificates, allowing for faster completion of the preliminary procedures for marriage, a power they have exercised since 2015, without the need to visit the civil registry.

With the entry into force of the Civil Registry Law, citizens can process their entire marriage files at the notary's office, where it will be guaranteed that the contracting parties meet the legal requirements established in the current regulations, without having to go to the Civil Registry.

The process of processing a marriage application involves verifying that the couple meets the legal requirements to marry, as well as the truthfulness of their intentions, thus preventing marriages of convenience with fraudulent purposes, including obtaining nationality or residency or a public pension.

Notaries, who have been able to officiate weddings since 2015, will now also be able to carry out the entire procedure. This reform also allows notaries to marry couples whose lives are in danger.

THIS SHORTENS THE DEADLINES

The fact that notaries can process marriage applications represents a significant reduction in processing times, helping couples to complete their applications in the shortest possible time.

For notaries, this is welcome news, coming almost six years after marriage could be performed before a notary. Since the Voluntary Jurisdiction Law came into effect in July 2015, authorizing weddings before a notary, Spanish notaries have married 41,474 couples.
