Types of long-stay visas in Spain
A long-stay visa allows entry into Spain for the purpose of permanent residence or for stays exceeding 90 days per semester. To reside in Spain or for stays exceeding 90 days per semester, two permits must be obtained successively:
A stay or residence permit, as the case may be, that will allow one to remain or reside in Spain for a period and under certain conditions.
After obtaining the aforementioned authorization, a long-stay Spanish visa is required, which will allow entry into Spain for the authorized stay or residence. The only exceptions to this rule are those foreign citizens with the right to free movement recognized by international agreements, such as citizens of the European Union.
1- For studies, research or volunteering
To undertake studies, non-work placements or carry out volunteer activities, a Study Residence Permit must be requested.
To work as an au pair, you will need to apply for a Study Permit. An au pair position involves working for a host family to compensate for your stay and living expenses while improving your language or professional skills, provided that this activity falls within the scope of the Council of Europe Agreement of November 24, 1969, on au pair placements.
Research tasks: If the research activity is to be carried out within the framework of a reception agreement signed with a research and technological development organization that has its main or secondary establishment located in Spain, you must apply for a Temporary Residence and Work Authorization for Research.
Researchers and scientists invited or contracted by Spanish public research administrations or bodies for the development of a technical, scientific or general interest activity or program, as well as members of staff who are part of an international scientific mission who travel to Spain to carry out study or research activities programmed by an international body or agency, and authorized by the competent authorities, must apply for a Residence Authorization with Exception of Work Authorization.
For any other research activity that does not fall under the above categories, you must apply for a Study Permit.
2- For family reasons
To reunite with a Spanish citizen or a foreigner legally residing in Spain, a Residence Authorization for Family Reunification must be requested;
For a minor adopted in Vietnam to travel to Spain with their adoptive parents, the latter must apply for a Residence Visa for Family Reunification; in this case, prior residence authorization is not required.
3- For work-related reasons
If you are self-employed, you must apply for a Temporary Residence and Self-Employment Work Permit
If you are employed by someone else, you must apply for a Temporary Residence and Work Permit.

- Ministers of worship (priests), members of the hierarchy and professed religious belonging to a church, denomination, community or religious order registered in the Register of Religious Entities of the Ministry of Justice, must apply for a Residence Authorization with Exception of Work Authorization;
- Seminarians and other persons in preparation for religious life, such as postulants and other persons linked to a religious order in which they have not yet professed, must apply for: A Study Residence Authorization if their activity will consist exclusively of studying at an authorized educational center in Spain, full-time, leading to the obtaining of a degree or certificate of studies;
- In any other case, they must apply for a Temporary Residence Authorization for Non-Profit Purposes.
